Morning Matters:

NYSE and NASDAQ Short Interest Numbers Released

Short interest numbers for the NYSE are reported for the period of settlement date January 29th. The NYSE saw short interest increase to 13,494,975,619 from 13,343,634,678 which is revised. Our calculation shows an increase of 151,340,941 shares or 1.13%. There were 1,725 increases with 1,530 decreases. Short interest numbers for NASDAQ are reported for the period of settlement date January 29th. Short interest rose to 6,701,137,021from 6,550,166,566 for an increase of 150,970,455 or 2.30%. There were 1,770 increases and 954 decreases.

Dedicated short sellers lost -4.26% in December, as reported by www.hedgeindex.com. In 2008, short sellers made 14.87%. In 2007 short sellers made 6.04%. 2008 turned into the best year since 2005 when this style made 17%. 2009 will go down as the worst year since 2003. For 2009 this style has lost -25.03%.
