New Short Interest Numbers Released For NYSE and NASDAQ
by Geoff Garbacz

June 25, 2010

Short interest numbers for the NYSE are reported for the period of settlement date June 15th. The NYSE saw short interest increase to 14,480,523,435 from 13,980,057,757 which is revised. Our calculation shows an increase of 500,465,678 shares or 3.58%. There were 1,840 increases with 1,440 decreases. In the last 16 reporting periods, NYSE has seen more advancers than decliners in 10 of the 16 reporting periods.

During this period on a trade date basis (5/25 to 6/10), the S&P rose 1.19%. The conclusion is shorts pressed their bets which is the norm since last September. In the prior reporting period, shorts took profits so this pressing shows aggressive behavior or redeploying gains. Short interest numbers for NASDAQ are reported for the period of settlement date June 15th. Short interest rose to 7,382,752,919 from 7,209,400,601 for an increase of 173,352,318 or 2.35% . There were 1,505 increases and 1,178 decreases. In the last 16 reporting periods, NASDAQ has seen more advancers than decliners in 12 of the 16 reporting periods.

Dedicated short sellers made 5.84% in May, as reported by www.hedgeindex.com. YTD this index is down -7.80%. 2009 will go down as the worst year since 2003 for short sellers. For 2009 this style lost -25.03%. In 2008, short sellers made 14.87%. In 2007 short sellers made 6.04%.
